Teen Tech Week and video games
Posted by
PPL Library Staff
Teen Tech Week is going on a PPL next week. And that made me start thinking about gaming. We have DDR and Guitar Hero, but what other games are fun like this?
I love Guitar Hero, even though I suck at it, like boxing on the Wii, and am pretty good at Paper Mario, but what games do you guys like?

Does anyone work at the library?
Working at the library is a great way to earn volunteer hours and have lots of fun.
You can help out with teen and children’s programs. You can decorate Tenn central. You can sign kids up for the summer reading program and to use the computers.
Probably the worst part about working at the library is doing discards. They are ok. Sometimes you get rewards for doing discards.
Working as a summer volunteer is awesome. You get to hang out with a bunch of kids your age and go on trips to other libraries. Last year we got to go to central and help with the naturalization ceremony. You get free snacks and sometimes really good cake. Acacia is a fun library to work at because it is so small. All the libraries are fun to work at because they are all different and have different things to do. Central is also loads of fun because it is giant; 5 stories tall. So whether it is Harmon or Burrton bar volunteering at any library is loads of fun.

GWAR

"Billions and billions of years ago, darkness was all that existed. Then The Master, ruler of the universe, created the planets and everything in them. But soon The Master became bored of this and created death, destruction and war. He enjoyed watching the peons die but soon even that became boring, he himself wanted to kill. So he began slaughtering the humanoids that littered the planets face, but that too lost its fun. He needed more of a challenge, so he created God-like creatures with whom he could do battle. But soon there were too many of these creatures, and he had to be rid of them. He conjured up all his power and created the most powerful he could, GWAR was formed. This elite fighting force was called The Scumdogs of the Universe. The Master used them to destroy all of his enemies. Millions of years and millions of battles later, GWAR became more powerful and craved even more power. Thinking that they could take over The Master's throne, GWAR attacked him and the greatest of all battles began. The carnage lasted a billion years before The Master created the ultimate weapon - the Death Pod. The pod swallowed GWAR up and delivered them to The Master."Ahhhh, foolish Scumdogs", The Master laughed. After thinking about what their punishment should be, he finally decided: GWAR shall be banished to a miserable mudball planet called Earth...The Earth rumbled when the mighty Death Pod crashed into its surface. Shaken and confused, GWAR crawled out and looked around. Thinking they could have a nice little planet once its cleared off, they destroyed the dinosaurs. Afterwards they created Stonehenge so they could play croquet, and weren't having that bad of a time. The Master looked down upon this and frowned, what kind of punishment is this? So to stop the nonsense he imprisoned GWAR in an iceberg on the frozen continent of Antarctica.Millions of years later: 1980ish. Glam rock was at its peak, groups like Poison and Whitesnake were dominating the airwaves. They inspired a whole slew of new "hair spray" bands. But little did they know, all of that hair spray put a hole in the ozone - right above Antarctica! Soon the unfiltered gamma rays melted the iceberg and GWAR was free.Meanwhile, Sleazy P. Martini was fleeing the country on drug charges, flying over the former tomb of GWAR. He picked them up and brought them back to America. He taught them how to use instruments and they learned the language from watching midget wrestling and MTV. Soon GWAR was known as the greatest band in the Universe...Unsatisfied with being worshipped by humans, GWAR still wishes to take revenge on The Master. They discovered a way. If GWAR could summon the World Maggot, they could ride it back to the center of the universe and finally defeat The Master. The World Maggot is a large maggot that lives in the center of the Earth, the only way to wake it is to slaughter millions of innocent people. So, taking advantage of their newfound fame, GWAR puts on shows to which their fans flock. They murder and mutilate these fans, show after show, until enough blood is spilled to wake the maggot."

my school is c.j. jorgensen
some of the teachers r cool and some r just plain mean.
the coaches for sports are good and we win a lot when it comes to sports.
like for example we won the baseball Championship trophys a lot last year, we also won the baseball chapionship last year and we went undefeated the whole way.
this year for soccer we won the chapionship agian and were undefeated the whole way!!!!
but for learning/academics some of us are not that good at that.
some fo the teachers push us too hard.
if we dont get it right then some of the teacers yell at us for getting it wrong
our subjets are boring too!!! In science wedont do any hands on labs, we hardly even do them at all.
most of the time we just take notes about the book and that it boring.
thats why i dont like school.

My thoughts on Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" and Shelley's "Frankenstein"
Posted by
Ironwood Teens
This year for English class, I had to choose two major, famous novels to read, one for American literature, and one for British literature. So I chose "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck, and "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley.
Both were interesting and certainly very different. I felt that the different characters in "The Grapes of Wrath" had more individuality and better represented a realistic portrait of life. But the overall plotline in "Frankenstein" was more complicated and altogether more intriguing. It brought up complex themes that were certainly very thought provoking.
In particular, "Frankenstein", despite being written in 1818, brought up certain themes that are as relevent today as they were then. For example, the issue of the sanctity of life. In "Frankenstein", natural philosophy student Victor Frankenstein ended up with a monster after he ignored moral standards in his research. The monster ended up being a complete menace to his life, so he did in fact reap what he sowed. This relates so closely to our society, where we face tough choices on issues such as abortion and stem-cell research. Where will we draw our lines? Will we be like Victor Frankenstein? In this, Shelley has given us much to think about.

Mitt Romney drops out of the GOP Race
Posted by
Ironwood Teens
Today Mitt Romney announced that he would be withdrawing from the GOP race for the party's nomination.
I think what he said was very true:
"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or (Barack) Obama would win," he said. "And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign be a part of aiding a surrender to terror."
McCain responded in his speech by welcoming ex-Romney supporters.
What do you think? Are there any Romney supporters here who would go to McCain? What about Huckabee?

Easy French Reader by R. de Roussy de Sales

They should not be hard to find, most booksellers should have them, especially if you search online.
They are great for practicing reading and building vocabulary or writing flashcards!

For those who have NFL Network, they are doing a replay of Super Bowl 42 tonight at 6:30pm (8:30 ET).
If you didn't see it Sunday, and have NFL Network, try to get a chance tonight. It was a great one. The NFL Network replays are usually pretty good, and cut out unnecessary time from the showing, such as the halftime show.

Super Tuesday wrap-up
Posted by
Ironwood Teens
Last night we recieved all the results from "Super Tuesday", and it was an interesting evening.
The race remains, but McCain merely confirmed what all the polls were saying.
Of all the speeches, Obama's was the longest and perhaps the most inspirational, but I found it lacked substance. It was nice what he wanted to do: I even wanted to do many of those things, but he did not explain how he intended to do so. That is, it's fine to want to unite people, but tell us how, because otherwise I think Obama will run into the same problems: party lines, disagreement, etc. Obama just isn't extremely clear and it seems like he is already trying to appease the general electorate.
That is what happens every election. In the primaries, candidates want the left/right to like them. In the general election, they worry more about the middle, since the far left/right has no other choice, anyway.
McCain's speech was shorter but also very good. Unlike Obama, he talked with a little more substance. Romney sounded a little mean, especially with how he started the speech. He realizes that it will take a lot to beat McCain, and he's not likely to get enough votes to overcome him. I think he would have done better.
I didn't see Huckabee or Clinton speak.
But it's interesting to examine the vice-presidental situation on the Republican side, given nothing major happens (the Democratic side is still close to discuss). There are two groups of thought on this: one suggests that McCain should choose a very moderate or even slightly liberal (on the theory that conservatives see it as the lesser of two evils). The other suggests that McCain choose a moderate to strong conservative.
Both have valid points. I would not at all rule out Romney and Huckabee as candidates for McCain's running mate. Huckabee seems like slightly more likely due to the good will between McCain and Huckabee as Huckabee has been helping McCain by taking votes away from Romney. Also, McCain was careful to congratulate Huckabee quickly and strongly BEFORE Romney during his speech. It's hard to say, but does this mean anything?
The right is looking at the polls right now, and sees that only McCain has a shot at beating Obama or Clinton in the general electron, hence why so many are now backing McCain even if they think he is not the perfect conservative. McCain does address this in his ads, however: he is tired of people not calling him conservative because of several more liberal positions, such as his amnesty stance of immigration.
